Who doesn't love Spring? The warm air is filled with a fresh scent. The trees blossom and the flowers wake up giving a sense of excitement to our garden. The anticipation of Summer is in the air and people come out of hibernation ready to shed their winter layers. The lawn movers are dusted off and cranked up and tons and tons of mulch is spread! Then, of course, there is Spring Cleaning! Most of us are ready to refresh our homes with a good clean from top to bottom after the winter months.
Luckily for us, gone are the days when we would have to physically scrub floors and dust and polish with bee's wax! Today we have all manner of products to help us breeze through Spring Cleaning! The best way to start, I find, is to make a realistic plan. Giving yourself the time you need to attack each room one by one. Here is a quick list of some of the cleaning tasks that will make a difference to each room.
BEDROOM
Strip bed of all bedding. Throw bedding in the washing machine
Pick up anything lying on the floor. Put away everything.
Dust any ceiling fans and blinds.
With a damp microfiber cloth dust all the surfaces and any decor. Repeat with a kitchen towel or with polish and a dry duster.
Vacuum the drapes and any upholstery.
Clean baseboards.
Vacuum the carpets or floors.
Make the bed with clean bedding.
Spritz the air with your favorite scent.
BATHROOM
Remove all towels and bath mats and put in the washing machine.
Remove any shower curtains.
Clear the bathroom of all products on surfaces.
Put cleaning products in sinks, bath and toilet.
Starting with the toilet, use a kitchen towel to wipe down the toilet, seat and outside. Scrub the toilet bowl with a toilet brush. Finally, put toilet cleaner in the bowl and closing the lid.
Attack the bath, shower and bath tile with cleaning product and scrubber. Finishing off with a dry microfiber cloth.
Wipe down the vanity with your favorite product and a microfiber cloth.
Scrub the sinks and faucets. Finish off with a dry microfiber cloth. Clean the mirrors, using a glass product or a wet microfiber cloth and polish with a dry microfiber cloth.
Wash the floor and baseboards with boiling water and floor cleaner. Dry with a dry microfiber cloth.
Replace bathroom items on the vanity and replace shower curtains, towels and bathmat.
LIVING/DINING/FAMILY ROOMS
Remove anything on the floor and put away.
Dust ceiling fan and vents with wet microfiber cloth.
Take off any throw pillows and blankets off the upholstery and vacuum all sofas, chairs and throw pillows.
Remove all decor from surfaces and dust with a damp microfiber cloth.
Using a damp microfiber cloth, dust all surfaces. Polish using a kitchen towel or furniture polish.
Vacuum and dust drapes and blinds.
Vacuum all carpets and floors.
Wash and dry all hard floors. Remember to clean baseboards.
Spritz with your favorite scent.
KITCHEN
Clear all surfaces.
Put cleaning products on all surfaces.
Starting with the cabinets, wash all surfaces. Remember to dry tops with a dry microfiber cloth.
Clean the front of all appliances, (cooktop, fridge, oven, dishwasher).
Scrub the sink.
Wash all the baseboards and doors.
Vacuum or sweep the floor. Mop the floor with boiling water and floor cleaner.
Replace all cloths and sponges.
I would deep clean the oven, fridge and freezer on separate occasions.
Although Spring Cleaning is not everyone's "cup of tea", I do find that there is something cathartic about giving our surroundings a new beginning. It's as if we are preparing ourselves for something big and exciting. Winter is over and we can not wait to open the windows and let the blooming outside in. Or, am I reading too much into a clean bathroom?!!
Whichever way you look at it, who doesn't like a clean house?!!!
